Continuing Education

Notice: The RS Board requires each CE course to be approved annually. No courses are automatically approved for multiple years.

Registered Environmental Health Specialist and Environmental Health Specialist Interns must successfully complete at least 15 clock hours of continuing education annually in order to renew their registration. The Board has developed a guide to Continuing Education Policies to outline how the Board applies the Rules requiring the continuing education.  Be sure to note updates related to continuing education venues, listed at the top of the Continuing Education Policies page.

The Board routinely approves courses developed and provided through the North Carolina State of Practice Committee, district educational meetings, conference education, teleconferences, and college courses. All requests for course or education approval should be made prior to attending or completing such education to ensure successful awarding of hours. The Board will evaluate and determine which courses, meetings, or other settings meet continuing educational requirements.

Effective January 1, 2004, a completed Course Approval application (pdf) must be submitted with each request for approval of a course or educational offering. A list of Board approved continuing education opportunities is published on this page after each Board meeting and is available for downloading. Attendance or participation in various educational settings must be documented in some fashion. This may include completion certificates, course final grades, electronic registrations, or a Board meeting register provided by course sponsors for use by participants.
